I know lots of companies depend on apathy and I sit firmly in that camp. No, I can’t be bothered to change banks, etc. Though I think I’ll now be taking a closer look.
Last year I thought my RAC renewal was excessive but didn’t do anything about it. However this year the premium had gone up yet again, from £380.98 to £482.97. I’ve been a member since 1977 and with a short break just prior to that, had been a member previously. Reward for loyalty? To increase my premium to almost £500! And I have only called them out twice in over 20 years.
Who would be most likely to be lulled into thinking you are rewarded for loyalty? Pensioners. Like me. But that hike would have been the best part of a month’s pension for me. Doing some research showed that as a new member, with exactly the same cover, including European assistance, it would cost someone £258.99. Nowhere near £482.97! So I rang and was ultra polite to the person at the other end, who kept offering me a slight discount until it got to £290, but for 14 months, not 12.
Loyalty penalty rather than loyalty bonus is fundamentally wrong. Just wrong.
